Fish Tanks

Fish tanks are a great way to liven up a room. Watching fish play and swim can be a relaxing way to drift off to sleep, and fish in an entryway can be an interesting conversation starter. From a glass bowl with a single goldfish to a 75-gallon saltwater tank full of exotic fish, tanks come in wide variety of shapes, sizes and styles.

Sizes
Fish tanks are measured by their water gallon capacity and range anywhere from starter tanks of one gallon to professional setups of 75 gallons or more. The most important factor to consider when deciding the size of your tank is how many fish you plan to keep in it; too small a tank and your fish will be uncomfortably crowded and may have aggression problems. For small fish such as bettas and tetras, the general rule of thumb is one fish per gallon of water, whereas larger fish may require as much space as three gallons per inch of fish. It is much easier to buy adequate tank space at first than try to accommodate crowded fish later on.

Water Type
The type of fish contained in fish tanks determines the type of water they will need: typically freshwater or saltwater. Freshwater tanks are the most popular and are well suited to beginner fish enthusiasts. These types of tanks require less money and supplies to get started and are more forgiving of imperfect conditions. Common fish for freshwater setups include goldfish, guppies, tetras and bettas.

Saltwater tanks are more common among experienced fish keepers because they are more difficult to maintain. Saltwater fish tend to be quite a bit more expensive than freshwater fish, which can be prohibitive to novices looking to get started, but their beauty and uniqueness makes them more appealing to many fish owners. Common types of saltwater fish for tanks include angelfish, clownfish and damsels.

Fish tanks come in a wide variety of shapes too, such as crescent, rectangular, octagonal and more. No matter which size, water type or shape you choose, the possibilities are endless when it comes to configuring your own unique fish tank setup.
